Free Bookstores in Chicago

220,000+ books given away since 2020

It started with Chicago’s first free bookstore in Avondale. Now we have two neighborhood locations with one mission: make books and literacy accessible to everyone.

Books4Cause Avondale Free Bookstore storefront at 2931 N. Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago

Take a book. It’s yours.

Since September 2020, our free bookstores have put more than 220,000 books into the hands of our neighbors. No cost, no catch, no membership. Browse like you would in any bookstore — then take home whatever speaks to you.

Our goal is simple: a safe, welcoming space that puts books and literacy within everyone’s reach. All are welcome. We also carry free DVDs and school supplies, and if you’re looking for something specific, tell us — we’ll do our best to find it for you.
