donate books in Chicago

Chicago book donations

We are offering free book donation pickups in the Chicago area. If you are interested visit our form to donate your books in Chicago. We will visit your home, office, or apartment.

This service is completely free and we do all of the heavy lifting. This service is running all year round in rain or snow, sunshine or hail. We generally do pickups once every one or two weeks depending on the demand. Once we have reached our threshold of donations we will contact you and set up a time.

The most ideal scenario is if you can leave the books out for us. This helps with the logistics of planning the pickup schedule.

The books that are picked up are sorted to be sent to Ghana. Those that can’t be sent are sold to pay for the cost of shipping, or sent to other worthy organizations in the Chicago area. If you are interested in becoming a recipient of books please visit our book donation recipient partner page.

University of Akron Book donation drive

University of Akron

For anyone that may have extra books that they no longer are using in the Akron area we are running a book donation drive at the university of Akron. If you would like to set up a meeting go to our form to donate books.

We are only going to be on campus next Wednesday 3/23. We already have a pretty full schedule so don’t leave this for the last minute. We are primarily going to be on the University of Akron campus, but we will come to your home if you live in the vicinity.

Thanks to all that are already participating. You are helping to build the future African leaders of tomorrow.

LSU book donation drive

Middleton Library
I wanted to give a special shout out to the Middleton Library at LSU. Not only did they allow us to use a storage space to house all of our boxes of books, but they also assisted with the loading of our truck. A special mention to John Stowe who stayed late to help us out and volunteer for the cause. Thanks also to Marsha Arrighi for coordinating the whole thing. The book drive at LSU would not have been as great a success without you.

University of Iowa book drive

University of Iowa

We are running a drive at the University of Iowa from March 8th through March 11th. If you have any books that you would like to donate please go to our donation form.

The purpose of this drive is to send books to Ghana to fill up the libraries at universities. We have partnered with HSRI a great organization that has sent over 300,000 books to Ghana to date. They are in the process of building a warehouse and community center that will be a central hub to distribute these books.

Donate Books to Ghana and Educate a Country

book drive for Ghana

Ghana desperately needs your donation of books and supplies. Accra, the largest city and capital of Ghana is home to almost 2 million residents. Another 2 million live nearby on the outskirts. This represents almost 20% of the total population of Ghana. An under-developed infrastructure, low productivity, and insufficient capital have hindered well-meaning government attempts to tackle the education crisis in the country effectively. It has fallen upon the good will and shoulders of outside agencies such as books4cause.com and its partner organization, Human Services Resources Inc (HSRI) to funnel donated books and educational supplies into the school classrooms and libraries. With a literacy rate of only 58% (49.8% female), Ghana falls to a dismal #186 in the comparison list of world countries.

Books4cause.com is a Chicago-based organization that was created in 2006 to collect books and other donations for overseas distribution. Accra, Ghana, has been identified as desperately in need of textbooks, reference books, and educational books for nursing, healthcare, law, and technology. By conducting book drives and campaigns, the company then sells some books online raising money towards building a combination library/media center in Ghana as well as costly shipping expenses. It costs approximately $1000 to ship 60 boxes or $10,000 for a sea container of books, supplies, and computers.

Books4cause offers to pick up books from your local book drive and individual donors at no charge, especially those in the Midwestern area. Schools, churches, or private charities who wish to participate simply need to collect as many good-condition books as possible and call for local pick-up. Of course, donated money is greatly appreciated and volunteers are cherished. Working in close conjunction, HSRI, the partner organization, runs the “Good Books for Africa” program and to-date has placed more than 300,000 books in Ghana’s schools. That may seem like a lot, but when one thinks about 10-12 students sharing each textbook, it is easy to see that many, many more are needed.

Books4cause.com is reaching out to elementary, secondary, and higher level institutions as well as private individuals who might consider offering their own book drive to support the valuable work of these organizations. Furnishing school classrooms can make a tremendous difference in the learning experience for the young people of Ghana. Educating the youth of this country will have lasting benefits that spread far beyond each child’s newly opened door to the future. Help the children of Ghana. Help today.

Donate your books for a cause

[AWD_likebutton]Books4Cause runs book drives and book donation campaigns which help fund and support various initiatives locally, nationally, and around the world.  Since we began arranging book donation drives in early 2006, we have raised thousands of dollars for our non-profit partners and salvaged tens of thousands of books that were headed for landfills. We are expanding our focus to support additional causes and continue to help those in need.

We reprocess donated books in several ways.  Books with resale value are sold in online marketplaces.  For every book we sell we send three books to Africa.  In addition a portion of each sale is sent to our partner The Friendship Circle, which runs mentorship programs providing assistance and support to the families of children with special needs.  We also run individualized book drives to support additional local organizations and student groups.

Most of our donated books are sent to Africa with the assistance of our non-profit partner Human Service Resources, Inc (HSRI). HSRI runs the Good Books for Africa program distributing books to children in classrooms and libraries in Ghana and elsewhere in Africa. To date HSRI has sent more than 300,000 books to Africa. Books that are not fit to be reprocessed are pulped and recycled.
